Ernesto Mayor, Jr. is Of Counsel. Ernie joined the firm following a 23 year career as in-house labor and employment counsel at Verizon Communications. In that role he provided day-to-day advice, drafted and updated human resources policies, conducted internal investigations, provided training for human resources professionals and managed employment litigation for a variety of business units across multiple states and Latin America. He represented the company before federal, state, and local agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Labor, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Florida Commission on Human Relations. Ernie also served as counsel in all matters related to labor relations, including collective bargaining, grievance processing, labor arbitrations and matters before the National Labor Relations Board.
Ernie began his legal career as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Tampa from 1986-1991. During this time he served as the Legal Advisor to the Tampa Police Department, founded and managed the Department’s Asset Forfeiture Unit, served as counsel to the Fire and Police Pension Board, and was appointed as a Special Assistant United States Attorney
Ernie is a native of Tampa and graduate of Jesuit High School. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1982 and his law degree from the Notre Dame Law School in 1986. While in law school, he participated in moot court and studied for a year at the University’s Concannon Program of International Law in London, England.
Ernie has been active in a range of legal and community activities. He is a member of the Hillsborough County Bar Association and the Tampa Hispanic Bar Association. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Tampa Bay Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Outback Bowl, and the St. Lawrence Parish Council. He served on the Hillsborough County Civil Service Board and has been a long time volunteer and supporter of Bay Area Legal Services, which awarded Ernie its Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award in 2000. He has been a coach for several youth league teams and a Parents’ Club President or volunteer at four Tampa schools.
